TOWNSHIP POLICE AND FIRE PROTECTION
POLICE PROTECTION
Having full time deputies came into being after the voters of Lawrence
Township voted in 1994 to provide Police Protection for the citizens
of the unincorporated areas. The protection was needed because of
the rapidly expanding business, industry, and many new residences
that have been built in the area in the past few years. The area continues
to see ongoing building in all areas.
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department could not provide
the needed manpower for the rapid increase. Thus the levy was proposed,
and successfully voted by the citizens of the township. This has enabled
the Lawrence Township Trustees to purchase vehicles and contract with
the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office. At the present time,
January 2005, we have 1 full time officer and fill-in extra hours
with off-duty deputy sheriffs.
The Lawrence Township Sheriff’s Deputies work out of the township
building. These officers had been hired under the COPS FAST grant,
which helped to keep our cost down. This was a federally funded grant
and has now been discontinued. As a backup, whenever an officer is
not available locally, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Dept.
handles the calls for Lawrence Township. Our officers handle approximately
450 to 500 calls per year.
FIRE PROTECTION
The Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department serves the residents of Lawrence
Township for both Fire and EMS. This department continues to be one
of the best-trained and staffed departments in the area. As of July
1st, 2002, they have hired 2 full-time firefighters/EMS personnel
to cover between the hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 p.m. They have also
expanded to have personnel cover from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. every
day of the week. This has dramatically reduced the time
needed to have trained personnel on the scene of an emergency. They
still rely very heavily on the volunteers to help with the needed
coverage above these two members. Our residents are very proud of
this department, and have shown it in the past by voting in the needed
funds when requested to keep it at such a high level of operation.
They also have many fund-raising activities to help offset costs.
Their department consists of: a 2004 1250 GPM 3000 gallon Pierce Tanker/Pumper,
a 1998 1500gpm/1000gal Pierce Pumper, a 1993 75’ Pierce Ladder
Truck, a 2006 Ford Brush Fire Truck, a 1985 Pierce Rescue Truck, a 1980
1000gpm/1000 gal Pierce Pumper, a 1975 1250 gal Pierce Tanker, a 2002
Lifeline Ambulance (Paramedic Equipped), and a 1995 Braun Ambulance
(Paramedic Equipped), and a rescue boat.
The Village of Zoar also has a fire department that covers the Village
of Zoar and assists Bolivar when requested.
